Fabiani and Budhhrani Heart Institute's New Year gift — a new rare cardiac intervention

The thought of undergoing a bypass or an open-heart surgery is in itself heart-aching news. But the good news in the New Year, for heart patients with critical cardiac conditions, is that the cardiologists at Fabiani and Budhhrani heart institute, a flagship unit of Sadhu Waswani Mission's medical complex has succeeded in performing a rare cardiac interventions. The intervention, which was till now performed at very few hospitals in India, was conducted by them within two years of its inception.

The main advantage of this procedure is that this is a non-surgical one and thus any patient including children, can easily undergo it. Many of the cardiac centers across the country are having surgical procedures to deal with heart problems.

The advanced device technology has made such complex procedures easy to accomplish. These technologies have made interventions in conditions like Atrial Septal Defeat (ASD) Closure, Ventricular Septal Defeat (VSD) possible. Therefore, at Heart Institute, the interventional cardialogists now have adopted the use of such devices.

Dr Ritu Dhawan-Bhatia, an interventional cardiologist at the Fabiani and Budhrani Heart institute, has performed a procedure on a four-year-old girl, Shraddha, who was born with narrowed aorta. In her case, instead of going for traditional methods of surgery, Balloon angioplasty was used.

In another case, a 62 year-old Vishwanath was successfully treated and sent to home in two to three days time. The patient suffered a heart attack in 2006, after which he had recurrent episodes of Ventricular Tachycardia (heart rhythm abnormalities), which was life threatening and required DC shocks. Dr Manohar Sakhare, implanted the Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD). This is again a rare cardiac procedure, done in very few centers in India. This device detects cardiac rhythm abnormalities and treats the same within seconds, thus preventing sudden cardiac death. The patient was discharged in three to four days in a stable condition without any complications.

The Cardio Thoracic Department of Institute has many well-experienced doctors like, Dr Shiv Gupta who has performed more than 700 cardiac surgeries, bypass surgeries, valve replacement and many pediatric surgeries and also has international experience.

Also, the institute's extensive community outreach programme consists of free heart check-ups that are held every month in Pune. A 24-hour free ambulance pick-up service is also available.
