Kolkata Tension is building up at Haripur in East Midnapore following Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s announcement about a proposed nuclear power plant there with the National Fishworkers’ Forum (NFF), a trade union, mobilising fisher folks against the project.

Pradip Chatterjee, a national secretary of NFF, said his outfit has organised an awareness campaign at Haripur, located by the Bay of Bengal, over the proposed nuclear park and claimed more than 10,000 fishermen are ready to oppose the project.

Chatterjee said a team from East Midnapore Congress district committee is likely to visit the area on January 17 and it will not be allowed in by the fishermen and locals. The team, he claimed, has postponed it visit that was scheduled for January 6.

Senior Congress leader Pradip Bhattacharya said the team will visit Haripur to assess the situation and prepare a report to be handed over to his party’s central leadership.

East Midnapore DM Choten Lama said a close watch is being maintained on Haripur fishermen but added the district administration had not received any proposal for land acquisition so far.

Meanwhile, Maoists distributed hand bills and posters at Nandigram on Saturday calling for a movement at Haripur. Chatterjee, however, claimed they don’t have any links with the Maoists.
