Heath set to unleash his competitive streak all over again

Chandigarh, March 2 Health Streak is having a ball in Chandigarh. Preparing with his Ahmedabad teammates for the forthcoming Indian Cricket League, Streak was at the Rose Garden in the evening, going for a run — “We had a good practice session in the morning. It’s great to be back playing cricket. The ICL has come as a pleasant phase in my life and I am looking forward to the competition.”

The former Zimbabwe captain, a useful allrounder at the international level too, will be part of the ‘Ahmedabad Rockets’, led by former Australian skipper Damien Martyn. The Indian Express caught up with Streak on a variety of topics.

Excerpts:

* What made you join ICL, when playing in the IPL could also have been an option? ICL also means that you may not be able to play county cricket for Warwickshire this season?
It doesn’t matter to me if I am playing for Zimbabwe, ICL or IPL. I am a cricketer at heart, if someone approaches me to play cricket and also offers good money, then I would take the offer. ICL is providing me with another opportunity to play cricket again. I committed to ICL first, so there was no question of joining IPL anyway. Also I have not signed a contract with Warwickshire yet, so it will not matter to me. I am enjoying being part of ICL.

* Did you speak to someone before joining ICL?
My friend and Warwickshire skipper Darren Maddy was part of the ICL and he had good things to say about it.

* How are things back in the Zimbabwe Cricket Union? Will things improve?
I am not in touch with the recent selection process followed by ZCU as I was largely in England. I don’t know if ZCU is still continuing with its preferences. But I would like to say that I was never against black players being part of the national side. The manner in which they were roped in was a disappointment though. The selection criteria should always be transparent but ZCU was not being clean and pushed for players who did not deserve to be selected. And the deserving ones were sidelined, to which I objected and resigned from the captaincy.

* How would you look at the present crop of Indian fast bowlers?
They are good and can rattle even the top batsmen around the world. However, I am quite impressed with Irfan Pathan. He is a useful all-rounder, comes at any given batting position and delivers.

* Do you think showing aggression goes with the nature of being a fast bowler?
Yes, having an aggressive approach is all about being a quickie. But one should never indulge in verbal warfare.

* Name two batsmen difficult to bowl to?
Sachin Tendulkar gave me a tough time and Inzamam was also difficult to bowl at. It will be a good challenge to bowl at him in the ICL.
