Chandigarh, August 12 Vegetable prices across the region have spiralled in the recent days, owing to heavy rains across the region. Prices of common vegetables, such as peas and tomatoes have shot up in the region. The price of cauliflower has also increased while other vegetables remain at a stable price. Traders say a gap in demand and supply have been created owing to the heavy rains that disrupts the transportation of these vegetables to the city, thus raising the prices.

The price of tomatoes has gone up by Rs 5 a kg, while that of peas has shot up by Rs 8 - 10 a kg. While tomatoes were available for Rs 20 - 25 a kg in the last week, their prices have gone up to Rs 25 - 30 a kg now. Peas, which were earlier available at Rs 35 - 40 a kg, are now available at a price of Rs 45 - 50 a kg. Similarly, the price of cauliflower has also gone up from Rs 25 a kg to Rs 40 now.

While the season of mangoes is now coming to an end, it is available at a price of Rs 50 a kg. Pears, on the other hand, are selling at Rs 50 - 60 per kg. “The price of tomatoes will rise further in the coming days if the rains continue. Many a times, the trucks have difficulty in reaching the city and the delay further leads to an increase in prices,” said Ram Singh, a vegetable vendor in Sector 26.
