Kolkata The city might soon have its first helpline to fight cruelty against animals with the Kolkata Police taking a strong initiative, along with NGOs Prabha Khaitan Foundation and the Debasree Roy Foundation. Saturday morning saw concerned citizens of the city take to the streets with their dogs to raise their voice against cruelty treatment of animals.

From CP Goutam Mohan Chakrabarty to senior bureaucrats, along with actors Debasree Roy and Moon Moon Sen, as well as industrialists Sundeep Bhutoria, all joined the march to speak out against cruelty to animals. The walk was organised as part of Project Karuna.

Debasree Roy said the first initiative of the project would be to vaccinate 100 stray dogs in the city by March this year. The project would also involve various NGOs and dog-lovers from the city and suburbs. As part of the project, an animal hospital will also come up at Tangra, which would have a crèche, operation theatre and doctors.
