Bhattacharya was hearing a PIL filed by Kamal Dey, editor of a Bengali magazine, on the improper use of national emblem in different establishments.
Interestingly, Bhattacharya had left his chair during a hearing on November 21 when a counsel pointed out that the word Satyamewa Jayate was missing below the Ashoka Pillar engraved in the chair of the Chief Justice.
According to the State Emblem of India (Prohibition of Improper Use) Act 2005, Satyameva Jayate must be written under the national emblem — the Ashoka pillar.
Advocate Uttam Mazumdar, the counsel for the Union of India, said the website of the Calcutta High Court was designed by the National Informatics Centre and is being maintained by the company.
Mazaumdar said he would contact the company to get the word inserted below the national emblem on the website.
Advocate Tapash Bhanja, the counsel for the petitioner, pleaded neither the state government nor the Union of India placed the status report as well as action taken report on improper use of the national emblems across the state.
The court asked the counsels to place the report by next Friday.
