Seeing the increase in crime rate, Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal has directed the Punjab Police to control the law and order situation, failing which action will be taken against the officers.
Sources said that last year, 956 cases of attempt to murder were registered, as against 900 cases in 2007. Also, 768 murders were reported last year, as compared to 760 murders in 2007.There was an increase in cases of armed theft from 4,200 cases in 2007 to 4,400 cases last year. The number of burglary cases remained the same both years, at 2,600. While 517 cases of rape were reported last year, the number stood at 519 in 2007. In 2006, only 386 such cases were registered.
What is also worrisome is that at least one case of kidnapping is reported daily. Statistics reveal that at least 12 women committed suicide every month, and as many were killed for dowry. The districts of Jalandhar and Ludhiana accounted for over 70 per cent of the kidnapping cases reported. Also, 60 rape cases were registered in Ludhiana alone.
Sukhbir said, I took the review meeting of the police department today and have given clear directions the increased crime rate has to be brought down. Law and order must be maintained at any cost. The Deputy CM said that he would take fortnight review meetings on the law and order situation in the state. Any officer not doing his or her duty with zeal will be checked, and appropriate action taken, he said. Our main focus will be to check drugs and gambling in the state. Drug smugglers will not be spared, he stated.
