Lucknow, February 5 The Ghaziabad police have arrested a man in connection with the robbery and murder that took place on the Delhi-Meerut highway on Monday. The police also recovered Rs 9.5 lakh of the robbed amount.

IG, Meerut Zone, V K Gupta said New Delhi resident Anil Sharma (25) was arrested from his house in Yamuna Vihar locality on the basis of a tip-off.

Several police teams have been formed to trace the three other accused who are at large. The three have been identified as Santosh, Amrish and Kamal. They are all unemployed and residents of Meerut, according to the police.

Ghaziabad Circle Officer Deepak Kumar said raids are being conducted on the basis of information collected from Anil, who runs a shop in Meerut.

On Monday, the four accused robbed Meerut-based jeweller Sunil Kumar of nearly Rs 46 lakh when he was on his way to Delhi in a DTC bus. The incident took place at Muradnagar in Ghaziabad district.

The miscreants shot dead conductor Preetam when he tried to bolt the doors of the bus to prevent them from escaping. An Uttar Pradesh Police constable, Ratnesh, who was travelling in the bus, was also injured when he tried to stop the culprits. Ratnesh is under treatment at the Vasora Hospital in Ghaziabad. Doctors said his condition is serious.

Moradnagar Station Officer Parshuram said after the incident they picked up a few persons who were earlier involved in highway robberies. During interrogation of one of them Anil’s name came to light. “We raided his house and recovered part of the robbed amount,” he said.

He said miscreants were aware that Sunil used to travel to Delhi with money to purchase gold. “Anil told us that they had planned the robbery two days ago,” Parshuram said.
