The announcement was made in the assembly and a government resolution for the same will be issued soon. The announcement comes as a relief to policemen in the state who at present can avail an expenditure relief upto Rs 5,000.
The major expenditure for any police station is the money paid for all procedures in connection with an unclaimed body. Towing away vehicles and taking possession of the same also add to the police’s expenditure.
The police stations get another allowance for informers along with their crime branch counterparts.
“It is a good move as there are many expenses that police stations incur as we hire services for technical work. Besides there are those sundry expenses related to the police activities,” said senior police inspector Sunil Deshmukh, Matunga police station. The state bears all the expenditure on maintenance, electricity and telephone bills for the police stations.
Despite the announcement some officers remain sceptical of the good that this move will do. HRA Ansari from Vikhroli police station says, “Such amounts remain in GRs and never percolate downward. In many cases it is pitiable as we do not get the money even for routine expenditures like the registers and stationery where we document cases. Also, on many occasions it is the donations from the citizens which enables us clear our bills.”
