The exhibition features 50 works over a decade (1998-2007), all of them enlivened by crosshatching — a classical shading technique in which one set of lines crosses over another set to create tonal effects. Though it is not widespread in the works of young artists, crosshatching has been featured in the works of stalwarts like FN Souza and Jogen Chowdhury. Says Bhowmick: “I don’t know why youngsters are not pursuing it, but it is an inseparable aspect of my art.”
Social and political issues are another inseparable aspect of the 54-year-old’s artwork. Like Dynasty-III which talks about families in politics. “Even today political rule is dominated by families,” says Bhowmick, without naming any G-word. While serious concerns are at the back of his mind, the nostalgic element is most visible now as Bhowmick chronicles his journey since his days as an arts student in Kolkata. The trip began with paperworks and black-and-white images, but Bhowmick turned to colours midway, and canvases two years ago. “It was a progression. The canvas was a new challenge. Not many had done crosshatching on it earlier, but the experiment worked well for me,” says Bhowmick, as he points to the works that act as a testament.
