Kolkata The residents of ward no 96 and 97 blocked the NSC Bose Road near Tollygunj tram depot for an hour on Monday protesting against the severe crisis of drinking water. Around 20 wards in south Kolkata reel under severe water crisis as the Kolkata Metropolitan Water and Sanitation Authority (KMWSA) failed to supply water to some pockets of these areas.

Bibhas Maity, Director General, Water Supply Department, claimed that pumps, which were not functioning properly, resulted in the water crisis. They have become functional again, he said. On the contrary the local councillors said the residents are yet to get drinking water.

“We are still facing acute crisis of drinking water for which the residents blocked the road in protest,” said Prahllad Chakraborty, Councillor, ward 97. Javed Ahmed Khan, Leader of the Opposition, allegedly said the civic body is not doing their work properly as the affected areas come under the jurisdiction of Trinamool Congress councillors.

“Since all the affected areas come under the TMC councillors, the Left Front-led civic body is not taking any prompt action. On Tuesday, we will go for a sit-in demonstration in front of the KMC,” said Khan.

Officials of the KMWSA met Mayor Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya and other civic officials of the water supply department to discuss the issue as large parts of south Kolkata including Behala, Garden Reach and Jadavpur have been reeling under water crisis for the past few days.
