Surat Any one intending to make a phone call from a PCO or a coin box booth have to show photo identity card and give his details to the owners, before dialing it.

This order came after Surat Police Commissioner Rakesh Asthaana had issued a notification in this connection and also informed the service providers to install CCTV cameras in the booths.

After the concept of making entire city under surveillance of CCTV cameras project, which is still pending, Surat police have taken one more step to make the city safer.

The city police had witnessed hundreds of bomb hoax calls made from phone booths from different areas in two years.

Taking lessons from such hoax calls, a few days ago, Asthaana had organised a meeting with the telephone service provider companies and requested them to install CCTV cameras or webcams to all existing booths.

Apart from the CCTV cameras, the booth owners were also asked to maintain a register with all the details about the names and addresses of the callers.

However, it is to be noted that many phone call booths in the city are being owned by blind people and it would be difficult for them to maintain register and verify all details.

“We have called meetings with the service providers and had given them ultimatum to install CCTV cameras or webcams in all the booths, Asthaana said.
