Pune Union Bank, Mumbai and Vikram Pillay Academy advanced to the semifinals of the Late Shardul Gaikwad hockey tournament being held at the Ammunition Factory hockey ground, Khadki on Friday.

Union Bank, Mumbai battled hard before beating opponents Green Meadows 2-0 in the first quarterfinal. The game got off to a fiery start with Union Bank having the better of the exchanges in the opening few minutes. They took the lead in the 22nd minute through Mukund Rajput. Manish Yadav cut past two defenders with ease and laid it off to Rajput, who did not miss. Green Meadows responded well and launched a few attacks of their own but the Union Bank defence remained stubborn and the half ended 1-0. The second half saw the Green Meadows players attack the opposition goal with purpose. They were passing the ball well and created many chances to score, but in vain. They won a number of penalty corners as well but it was the brave keeping of Union Bank’s Anil Doke that denied the opposition the equaliser. Doke saved long shots as well as shots from point blank range. At this stage Green Meadows were throwing most of their men forward and Union Bank were playing on the counter attack. In the 55 th minute, Kapil More scored his team’s second goal and sealed the victory. More scored a good goal after being set up by Manoj Valmiki. Soon after the referee blew the final whistle and the match ended 2-0. Union Bank will now face Rajesh Pillay Academy in the semifinal.

In the second quarterfinal, Vikram Pillay Academy cruised past Phaltan XI 7-0 thanks to a hat trick by left out Yuvraj Valmiki. Vikas pillay (2) and Cyril Bernard (2) scored the rest of the goals for the winners. Vikram Pillay Academy will now face Super XI in the semifinal.
