“We have a special drive in place to keep a check on traffic violators and other untoward incidents on Holi,” Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) S N Shrivastava said. “A joint police team, including personnel from the traffic department and the district police, will be equipped with alcometers to check drunk driving,” he added.
“We are also carrying on an awareness campaign through the media. Our force will be out in large numbers to ensure a trouble-free and accident-free festival,” He added.
In black and white:
* Offenders will be arrested under Sections 184 (dangerous driving), 185 (drunk driving) and 195 (driving vehicle without authority) of the Motor Vehicle Act. Offences under the aforesaid IPC Sections are bailable but attract a fine between Rs 1,000 to 2,000 and imprisonment of six months.
* The police force will be armed with 12 interceptors and 40 speed radar guns to check speeding, in addition to over 200 alcometers.
* Anybody found driving with alcohol levels above 30 mg/ 100 ml of blood faces imprisonment up to six months or a fine of Rs 2,000 or both.
* 46 accidents were reported on Holi in 2008, of which 13 were fatal, against 56 accidents, including 17 fatal, in 2007.
* In 2007 and 2008, most accidents on Holi took place between 11 am to 3 pm and in the evening from 5 pm and 9 pm.
* Over 2,100 people were fined by the Delhi Police on Holi last year for violating traffic rules, including drunk driving and jumping red lights.
* Authorities have banned the sale of balloons less than two inches in size from March 8 to 17 to prevent people from throwing them at passersby during Holi.
