Chandigarh The parents of a 23-year-old home guard volunteer, who died at Government Multi-Specialty Hospital, Sector 16, today have alleged negligence on the part of doctors who were treating him at the Government Multi-Speciality Hospital, Sector 16.

The deceased, Shakti Singh, was suffering from renal failure and was under supportive treatment at GMSH-16.

Shakti’s father, Constable Dhnanjay Singh, who is posted at the Police Lines, said his son was suffering from renal failure and was being treated at the PGI.

“The doctors at PGI had conducted a few medical tests and were waiting for the reports. Yesterday, Shakti’s condition deteriorated and we rushed him to GMSH-16, where he was admitted in the emergency ward and later shifted to the male ward,” he said.

He alleged that no senior doctor attended to his son.

“I had gone to the PGI in the morning to collect Shakti’s reports. When I returned at 10 am, I found Shakti was breathing heavily and was breathless within a few minutes. I called the doctor on duty, but junior doctors came for examination. When his condition started deteriorating, senior doctors were called. By the time they had decided to refer him to the PGI, Shakti was dead,” he told mediapersons.

Refuting allegations of negligence, Medical Superintendent Usha Bishnoi said: “The patient was admitted in the hospital at around 4 in the evening and we immediately started supportive treatment. Both his kidneys had failed. According to PGI reports, his creatinine level had gone up by 15 times than the normal limit. We did what we could.”

The authorities, however, failed to answer why the patient was not referred to the PGI yesterday, when his condition was deteriorating.
