The request had come from Mayawati herself, said Sri Prakash Jaiswal, Union Minister of State for Home. Besides, the Centre is also considering the alternatives suggested by the state government regarding enhancing her security cover, he said while talking to a section of reporters on the premises of UP Congress Committee's office.
The minister was in the city to attend a workshop organised by the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee to restore the party's base in the state.
The ministry has also asked all state governments to ensure that there is no violation in parameters set for Mayawati's security.
Replying to a question regarding Maywati's demand for making amendments in the Act meant for providing SPG security, Jaiswal said the SPG is a special force.
“Usko yadi popular bana diya jai to upyogita hi khatm ho jayegi (If it is made a popular, it would lose its utility.” Mayawati, he said, has already been given NSG security cover.
As for the Act, it should be amended only after considering all possible results in the future.
Jaiswal said the Centre has provided NSG security to all chief ministers who are facing threat.
The terrorists, he said, were facing disappointment because of their failure to execute any operation in J&K. “Because of their frustration, they may execute any operation. We have alerted all the CMs and the VIPs. Their security arrangements have been tightened,” he said.
Regarding the attack at the Central Reserve Police Force’s (CRPF) Group Centre in Rampur, he admitted that both the CRPF and the government had been reckless. “We suspended two CRPF officers,” he said.
Earlier, addressing his party leaders, the minister had said the state governments must show strong will to fight Naxalism.
“The state governments in Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Bihar and Orissa are still to put an effective check on the growth of Naxalism,” he told the gathering.
Commenting of the law and order situation in UP, he said the state government cannot improve law and order without giving priority to merit in the postings of officers.
“If the state wants to punish police officers, it posts them in the Police Training College,” he said. The police recruitment scam was a pointer to the politicisation of police matters.
Better law and order is necessary not only for the security of people but also the industrial development of the state.
