Amethi Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, daughter of Congress president Sonia Gandhi, has ruled out the possibility of entering politics by contesting the next Lok Sabha elections.

During her visit to Amethi on Tuesday, a day after the election schedule was announced, partymen requested her to contest from nearby Sultanpur. But she declined, saying: “I have no such plans at present. I’m here to look after my mother and brother’s constituencies so that they can concentrate on campaigning in the rest of the country.”

Wasting no time, she took charge of campaign planning in Amethi and Rae Bareli, the constituencies of her brother Rahul Gandhi and mother Sonia Gandhi. Priyanka first addressed Congress Sewa Dal volunteers at Gauriganj, followed by a meeting of heads of party’s village and block level committees from different parts of Amethi at a guest house in Munshiganj. Both were closed-door meetings.

While addressing the Sewa Dal volunteers, she reminded people how she had taken the charge of campaigning for her mother Sonia Gandhi around 10 years ago, and said that it was a testing time again.

“Around 10 years ago, there was no structured organisation of the party. We used to campaign during day time and then form block level and village level committees at night. Things have changed since then, we are now well organised and the need is to tell people about the things that we have done,” she told Sewa Dal workers.

Asking party workers to be prepared for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, she told them that “only those who serve the people without any expectations would be remembered in politics,” sources said. Priyanka, who reached the venue at 11.50 am, stayed at the camp for around an hour. She asked them to fan out in Amethi and Rae Bareli and highlight development works being done by her mother and brother.

“She asked us to earn respect by helping poor at the grassroots level and to stand by them in their need,” a Sewa Dal worker said.
