Ludhiana, March 1 Women power, once unleashed, is like floodwater which will meander through nooks and crevices, to go on and on, overcoming obstacles on the way. Women will always use their potential fully and effectively, combining home and hearth. And now, even those who don’t need to work for the daily bread and butter are stepping and using their potential to carve a niche for themselves. Families too have recognized their need for self expression and have given loads of support , helping them to break away from the traditional mode. Society has accepted this new role of the bahu with aplomb. Rather, there is a sneaking admiration with the elder generation almost wishing that they might have taken such a plunge years ago!

Svelte ,charming and mother of three small kids Anumit Swani, a computer engineer, was on the lookout for a challenging occupation that gave her freedom without restricting her to the 9 to 5 routine. Hailing from the family of Swani Motors, Anumit has been the general manager of OSIM , an international company having it’s presence in 31 countries, for three years. “Our company has focus on four fronts - fitness , relaxation, health and beauty. I am in charge for it’s overall marketing in Punjab and Chandigarh,” tell us the young lady. The company has opened stores in the town as well as Chandigarh. This dynamic lady also organizes exhibitions for AXARA (Paris) , a pręt -a- porter label from France dealing in trendy garments. She shares her experience with us — “I feel I am growing every day, and my frequent traveling has made my kids more independent.”

‘Sportking’ is a household name for hosiery goods, having it’s presence across the width of the country and abroad. The family decided to start a state of the art institute of fashion technology affiliated to the Pearl Academy of Fashion, and who could head it better than their beautiful and talented daughter-in- law, the winsome mother of two, Anjali Avasthi . Harnessing her administrative acumen, she was designated as the President of the institute . Three years down the line, SIFT has become a name to be reckoned with in the design industry . “ It was both challenging and tough to put this institute on the rails, but the results have been the gratification,” affirms Anjali ,who could easily been just another socialite! Today students of SIFT are coming from all parts of the country and are getting lucrative job offers from the industry. That is enough for the President Ms Avasthi to feel elated.

Tickling the taste buds of the gourmand with innovative desserts , cakes , savories and chocolates was the forte of the graceful Poonam Aggarwal. The necessary push from the family and friends gave her the impetus to start a commercial venture. Starting with making the odd pudding or two for friends, in six years , Poonam has graduated to a full- fledged food business by the name of ‘Poonam’s Cream and Crunch’, which caters to big weddings and dos in the city and neighboring states. She also has our own eatery on Pakhowal Road, and has tie up’s with Spencer’s and Reliance stores. “Now I have a team of 12 trained workers, so all I have to do is to supervise, ” she says. Chocolates with liquor centers and customized wedding cakes are the latest which she has added to her range of goodies. This dynamic bahu is also the present president of Lakshmi Ladies club.

Interior designing seems to be synonymous with finely tuned, soft spoken yet chic Taran Bal, who has been responsible for beautifying many a home in the town. Belonging to the family of Laxmi Cinema, Taran tentatively stepped out from threshold to teach at JD Institute of Fashion Technology for three years, before branching out on her own. A qualified interior designer, Taran likes to take on the interior totally with furnishings , accessories et al. Commenting on the trend in this industrial town, she says, “The folks here are getting more focused on whether they want the opulent look or the straight line effect. That makes my task easier, for my job is done only if the my client gets the desired effect in his ‘ ashiana’,” quips the smart lady who outsources quite a lot of her stuff from Delhi and Mumbai.

Many more to come and many doing so. These new generation daughters-in- law have surely not only satisfied their own creative urges but made a valuable contribution to the development of the town.
