Mohali Thieves continue to have a free run in Mohali, even in the new year. The dense cover of fog, prevailing in the area since the last week has further added to their convenience as they are able to loot houses, burgle shops and lift vehicles during the night hours.

On Friday night, gangsters stole away gold ornaments and valuables estimated to be worth Rs 4.5 lakh from a house in Sector- 71 besides lifting two vehicles from Phase 3B2 and Phase V parking, the police confirmed on Saturday.

Satwant Singh of Sector-71 reported that he and his family were in Delhi since December 23 and when they returned on Saturday, they found the locks of their house broken and the place ransacked.

Parwinder Kaur of Sector-4, Kharar, had parked her scooter in the Phase 3B2 parking but when she retuned from her office, she found the scooter missing.

Ram Kumar of Shahimajra village in Mohali lost his motorcycle from the Phase V parking. The police have lodged separate cases of theft but are still clueless.

Six booked for being in possession of illicit liquor
The District police began the new year with the registration of several cases of liquor smuggling. Of the total seven FIRs registered on Day 1 of 2009, five cases were lodged under the Excise Act against persons involved in liquor smuggling. A total of 41 bottles of illicit liquor were recovered from five persons booked under Sections 61, 1, 14 of the Excise Act at police stations in Phase I, Kharar and Lalru. In another case on Friday, a resident of Green Enclave in Daon village near Mohali was booked under the Excise Act for allegedly possessing 37 bottles of illicit liquor in the Phase I police station.
