Mumbai Even as lakhs of home hunters pin their hopes on getting one of the 3,863 flats that Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) has decided to put up for sale, the authority has started cracking down on agents trying to cash in on the dreams.

MHADA has filed a cheating complaint against a realty agent’s firm for promising MHADA flats to prospective buyers during the last allotment of 870 flats at Malvani in Malad. These 180 sq ft flats, meant for the Economically Weaker Sections, were priced at Rs 4 lakh each. The firm had allegedly issued advertisements, in an English tabloid and a Marathi daily, for a 1-bedroom flat priced at Rs 4.30 lakh in Malvani where the additional Rs 30,000 was to be the agent’s commission.

“However, the case was shut as the agent told the police during interrogation that the cost of his flats were actually Rs 14.30 lakh and what had appeared in the ads were actually a misnomer,” said MHADA’s vigilance chief Jawahar Singh.

He added that though the advertisements nowhere made any reference to MHADA flats, a site visit revealed that there were no other projects in the area. “We found that there were no projects other than the one by MHADA in the area,” said Singh, who on Wednesday lodged a complaint with the local police.

Meanwhile to eliminate any delay as in the case of the previous Malvani allotment or any possible manipulations during the draw of lottery for the existing flats, the MHADA has decided to get their lottery software screened through Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (VJTI). Till date over 6 lakh application forms have already been sold which is 150 times the number of flats available.
