Airplanes are the favourite whipping boy of every environmentalist, but Kati Ihamäki of Finnair claims to be a smaller culprit. As Vice-President of Sustainable Development of Finnair, she is on a mission to reduce the airline’s carbon footprint. “We’re trying to green the skies by reducing carbon emissions and through recycling waste and creative usage of resources,” says the 40-year-old before pointing out that Finnair is one of the few airlines with a post for a VP for Sustainable Development.

“We press the aluminum cans after usage and recycle the newspapers needed on every flight. All the while, we make sure that service to our clients isn’t affected. We also use to corporate blogging to create a more open approach involving different stakeholders,” says Ihamaki, who stopped by New Delhi after a gap of 11 years.
