The committee, headed by veteran Congress leader and CWC member Janardan Dwivedi, has AICC general secretary Mohsina Kidwai and Kumari Selja as its members. State PCC president Kaul Singh Thakur and CLP leader Vidya Stokes are already in Delhi to attend the meeting.
PCC general secretary Asha Kumari said, “The committee is expected to consider the names forwarded by the PCC and submit its report to the AICC poll panel for its final approval. I believe before this week-end, we will have all the names cleared.”
Sources in the party confirmed that former CM Virbhadra Singh, who has already left for his second round of touring in Rampur area, is almost certain to contest from Mandi.
Virbhadra Singh has been camping in Delhi for the past two weeks and is understood to have been assured of his candidature. Partymen admit that the former CM remains the only winnable candidate in Mandi in view of his wide acceptability in two districts of Mandi and Kullu, besides the tribal belt, including Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti. The only worrying factor for the party is how the conviction of Sukh Ram will affect the poll atmosphere in Mandi. However, Kaul Singh Thakur asserted, “Panditji’s (Sukh Ram) case will not have any impact. We will get his support.”
