Kolkata The West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Examination has completed the process to allow re-examination of answer scripts of students — a first time initiative in the history of the council.

According to council officials, if the legal formalities are completed as per schedule, the students appearing in the 2010 HS examination will be able to apply for re-examination of answer scripts. So far, the examinees could only get their answerscripts scrutunised — marks allotted on each question were added up again and the unmarked questions were allotted marks.

But with the re-examination or review option, the answerscripts would be re-evaluated once again. “A proper regulation would have to be enacted in this process. The Board has decided on a final draft in a meeting today and it will be sent to the concerned department,” said Onkar Sadhan Adhikari, president of the Council. He added that each student will be allowed to re-examine a maximum of two subjects.

Adhikari said in the near future, the Council will also come up with a process of grade improvement. At present, the council follows a pattern of indirect grading where marks are awarded with grades in case of each subject. According to the officials, the Board will make the results of the review available in time so that it does not affect the students.

The Council president also said it is considering the proposal of having different subject combinations, which are not offered by schools at HS level. “There are a number of subjects which are taught at the college level but not at the HS level. We are considering the subject combinations offered by other Boards and trying to offer similar combinations at the HS level,” said Adhikari.
