The Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) on Saturday night arrested a suspect allegedly involved in the May 10 blast at a court in Hubli in Karnataka. The arrested accused, identified as Zakti Shaukat Ali Iqbal Ahmed, hailing from Belgaum, was handed over to the Karnataka police on Sunday for further investigations.
“The arrested accused was held by immigration authorities at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport at about 8:30 pm on Saturday, and was handed over to the Sahar police. He had arrived from Muscat. After conducting enquiries, we found that he was wanted in connection with the Hubli court blast. A team from the Karnataka police arrived in the city and has already taken custody of the accused,” said Joint Commissioner of Police, ATS, Hemant Karkare.
“This arrest is not related to the recent Ahmedabad or Bangalore blasts, and further investigations in the matter will be conducted by the Karnataka police,” Karkare added.
On May 10, a low intensity blast caused by an improvised explosive device took place at the JMFC court premises in Hubli, located in the northern part of Karnataka. Being a Saturday, there were no casualties in the blast as the court was shut. The court was trying cases against seven alleged terrorists arrested in the state. Investigators suspected the involvement of the terrorist outfit Lashkar-e-Toiba and the Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) in the blast.
