Mumbai Posters, banners and offices of MLA Hitendra Thakur were targeted by people of Achole Village during the funeral procession of Pravin Dhule (24) the slain Republican Party of India (RPI) leader from Vasai. Dhule was shot outside his office at Achole Village in Nallasopara (east) by unidentified gunmen on the afternoon of January 29. The funeral procession moved at a snail’s pace as hundreds of mourners surrounded the flower decked truck carrying Dhule’s body.

Along the 3 km route of the funeral procession, from Achole Village to the crematorium at Tulinj, the mob did not spare a single poster of Vasai Vikas Mandal featuring Hitendra Thakur.

According to deputy superintendent of police Chandrshekar Chowgule, only those banners that had the pictures of the suspects were targeted by the mob.

Dhule’s elder brother Ishwar Dhule, also a RPI leader, had given names of suspects in the FIR at the Nallasopara police station. The police is now keenly pursuing three of those named- Sikander Sheikh, Arvind Singh alias Dara and his brother Randha Singh. All three have previous criminal records including murder and incidentally they had entered Vasai Vikas Manch, the regional political outfit of MLA Hitendra Thakur. Dhule also spoke of the involvement of Bilal Sheikh, Anil Singh and Aslam Sirodaya.

Pravin Dhule was an influential person in Achole Village and had a huge following if the turnout at his funeral is anything to go by. The cause of the enmity between those who joined Thakur’s political outfit and Dhule is yet unknown. Chowgule said that no arrests had been made and added that there would be some breakthrough in the case by Saturday.
