Kolkata Estranged allies Congress and Trinamool, which went into the May 30 civic polls separately after their seat-sharing talks broke down, today opened talks once again to decide the fate of at least 23 municipalities where none of the two can form boards on their own.

Congress Legislative Party leader Manas Bhuniya said while the Trinamool would need his party’s support to form boards in at least 15 municipalities, the Congress would need help from Mamata Banerjee’s party in eight municipalities.

The 15 municipalities where Trinamool is ahead of Congress but is falling short of a clear majority are: Garualia, Titagarh, Boangaon, New Barrackpore, BudgeBudge, Sreerampur, Champdani, Konnagar, Ramjibanpur, Kharagpur, Purulia, Kalna, Siuri, Rampurhat and Bolpur.

Bhuniya claimed the Congress can form boards in Cooch Behar, English Bazar, Baduria, Basirhat, Jaynagar-Mazilpur, Ghatal, Daihat and Rishara municipalities with Trinamool’s support.

Bhuniya said a final decision on the formation of boards would be taken in the second week of June after Pranab Mukherjee returns from abroad.

Jyotipriya Mallick, Trinamool MLA from Gaighata in North 24-Parganas, too said a final decision on the formation of boards with the support of the Congress would be taken in the second week of June. Bhuniya said local party leaders in the municipalities that have thrown up a hung verdict have been asked to ward off any attempts by the Left to form boards there.
