The latest incident occurred barely a day after a diamond worker committed suicide in the neighbouring Amreli district due to financial crisis.
The Bhaktinagar police in Rajkot said Maqbool Fakir (30) and his wife Shabnam (20) had consumed poison. They said investigation has revealed that Maqbool was running a small car garage near their home in the Anandnagar Colony on Kotharia Road. His income had gone down recently.
“Maqbool did not earn a single rupee in the last 15 days. The couple was left with no money at all to buy even ration. Finding no other way, the couple decided to end their lives and consumed pesticide. It was Maqbool who first gulped down the poison with water and Shabnam followed suit,” the police said.
They added that the medical reports also revealed that the two did not eat anything for the last three days. The police said the couple was rushed to the hospital by the neighbours, who found them in an unconscious state.
Maqbool has five siblings, who work as small-time labourers or drive auto-rickshaws. He tied the knot only last year. The couple said they did not discuss their situation with Maqbool’s brothers, as they too were struggling to make both ends meet.
