Mumbai A 40-year-old man was booked by the Malwani police for assaulting his wife with a razor and causing grievous injuries. Abdul Sayyad, a hawker, is absconding after allegedly committing the crime. His residence is at Asmi Nagar slums in Malwani, said the police. According to the Malwani police, they have started conducting enquiries to trace the whereabouts of the accused.

According to the police, Sayyad is an alcoholic and regularly demanded money from his wife who is a cook. “On Sunday night, Sayyad demanded a sum of Rs 20 to buy liquor. When his wife Mehrunissa refused to do so and asked him to stop drinking, Sayyad lost his temper and started fighting with her,” said Senior Police Inspector Jaywant Hargude of the Malwani police station.

During the argument, Sayyad took a razor and slashed at Mehrunissa’s face and hands several times. When Mehrunissa started screaming , Sayyad got panicked and fled the area thinking that his wife’s scream would draw the attention of neighbours.

“Mehrunissa was later admitted to a local hospital at Malwani. The wounds were superficial and there were no deep injuries. We have filed a case of causing grievous injury against Sayyad and are conducting enquiries to trace his whereabouts,” added Jaywant Hargude.
