Kolkata Anjum Pervez stood in front of the CPM headquarters at Alimuddin Street, his eyes filled with tears as he looked up at the party flag flying half-mast. “I used to see him sitting at the tea stall nearby with a few of his colleagues around him. That was in the 1960’s, I was barely 15. He did not speak much, most of the time he just listened. He had a towering personality. Today, I feel as if the roof over my head has been snatched away,” said the businessman.

Nehaz Ahmed, a shop owner, is a local resident. “The CPM office was originally in a smaller building, adjacent to the present one. As a boy I went to that office once or twice and saw Jyoti babu. Despite the CPM headquarters being located here, we have never faced any road blockades. It was all courtesy Jyoti babu,” said Ahmed. “There are many leaders in our party, but he was different. On many occasions he helped me,” added Abul Hussain, who used to be Basu’s driver.

On Sunday morning, with all the leaders at the hospital, the office wore a deserted look. A few functionaries were sitting in front of the TV. A large number of people gathered at the gate, eager to know when the body of the departed leader would be brought here.

In the afternoon, top CPM leaders, including Prakash Karat, CM Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, party state secretary Biman Bose, met at the office to discuss the details of the funeral. Bhattacharjee read out his reaction and without taking questions from the media, left the place. Next came Bose, who looked exhausted, and read out the funeral plans. “Bimanda has been crying, saying he has lost his father,” said one of the leaders.
