Shahjahanpur lad Rajpal Yadav was back on home turf on Thursday to lobby for his laff-a-riot Rama Rama Kya Hai Ye Drama at Inox multiplex in Gomtinagar. The pint sized comedian expressed his relief at once again being able to fold his hands and Say “Namaste” which had become a long forgotten word in his lexicon whilst touring the big metros. “It’s the air of this city, it breathes a new life into me,” he confessed, admitting to still harbouring fond memories of his stint with the BNA and performances at the Rai Umanath Bali auditorium,Yadav said he would never return to the theatre as he had never left it in the first place. “Even today, with 70-80 films to my credit, I still find time to do a play at least once a year. Right now too I am preparing to take to the stage in Golmaal Pyaar Ka.”

Denying that he has been typecast as a comedian, Yadav said he had played a very serious role in Undertrial, Chandni Bar and several other films as also the male lead in films like Main, Meri Patni aur Woh and Main Madhuri Dixit Banna Chahti Hoon. “Today it is the story which is the hero, the lead role. We all just play characters. It doesn’t matter wheher you are doing a serious role or a comic one. How honestly you portray the character, makes the role convincing to your audience. The purpose of cinema is to entertain. There is no art or commercial cinema,” he averred. “Only good cinema and bad cinema. “

Yadav stressed his latest, Rama Rama... was an attempt to fill in the void left by Basu Bhattacharya and Hrishikesh Mukherjee. “Clean, healthy, family entertainment.”

So does he attempt to fill the slot left behind by Amol Palekar once upon a time?

“Amol Palekar, Sanjeev Kumar, Mehmood, Charlie Chaplin— they had their own place, their own slots. I cannot even attempt to fill in their shoes. I am trying to create my own slot. In forthcoming films like Chal Chala Chal, Masti Express, Crazy 4U you will see me try to do that to the best of my ability.”
