Ahmedabad Marine products in India are under leveraged, and there is a huge potential to enhance exports in this sector through creation of value supply chain, an Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A) professor said on Sunday.

"Today, 90 per cent of total marine produce are consumed domestically in India, and exports of processed marine products is under 10 per cent. So, there is a huge potential to enhance exports through creation of value supply chain," Professor G Raghuram told reporters on the sidelines of 5th Agri Business Summit— Amaethon.

The consumption of marine products in India in comparison to the food basket is very low, he added. "The advantage in India is that we have an exclusive coastline and there are no boundary disputes as compared to other nations. So, promotion of coastal economic zones is comparatively easier," Raghuram said.

Highlighting the market potential of marine products in the state, he said the varieties of species near the Gujarat coast such as shrimps are very good. "Also, we have not yet leveraged the aqua culture here," he added.

He pointed out that the countries doing well in marine exports are not only those who depend on sea catch, "because it has variations on

certain counts, it is aqua culture that helps".

"It's unfortunate that we have not yet taken very seriously the growth potential of fish marine products along the coastline of Gujarat," he said.
