Kolkata Even as the new IIMs in the country have been struggling to create an identity of their own, the seventh IIM, Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Management also known as IIM Shillong, has created a niche for itself within two years of its inception by bringing in courses that cater to the local population of the North East.

The institute has also used golf and football in a novel way to create an identity of its own.

As the first batch of 63 students graduates from the institute in first week of April, the institute has developed a number of courses under the “Centre for Development of North East”, which include courses on health management, retail management and sports management. So far, about 200 students from the North East have enrolled in these disciplines.

The B-school has also stressed on sports to woo the local population and corporates. It has associated itself to Shillong Lajong football club.
