Lucknow/New Delhi A third-year student at Indian Institute of Technology-Delhi has been arrested on charges of abducting and harassing a first-year student of IIT-Kanpur.

Surendra Bhukhiya, who was arrested from IIT-Delhi campus, was taken to Kanpur and produced before a city court on Thursday. He has been sent to 14 days’ judicial custody.

Bhukhiya, a student of textile engineering, was reportedly pressuring a girl from IIT-Kanpur to marry him. She registered a case at Kalyanpur police station in Kanpur on November 25.

Kanpur Additional SP (Rural) Arun Kumar Pandey said Bhukhiya was arrested after evidence was collected against him, about sending obscene and threatening messages to the girl.

In her complaint, the girl said Bhukhiya had morphed her photos and threatened to upload then on social networking websites if she refused to marry him.

Police said the two knew each other for a few months before the boy started harassing her. The girl told police that she had lost her handbag and cellphone a few months ago. These were later found by Bhukhiya, who asked her to meet him in Delhi and collect them.

When she went to meet Bhukhiya, he abducted her and took her to a temple, where he attempted to force her to marry him, but she escaped, an officer of Kanpur police said.

The complainant said Bhukhiya then threatened to misuse her photos he had obtained from her phone, and sent her vulgar messages over email, Facebook and phone.

Shashi Mathur, Dean of Students at IIT-Delhi told Newsline, “Kanpur police approached the institute with an arrest warrant against the student. They told us that a girl had filed a case against him in Kanpur, reportedly stating that he had troubled her. There could also have been a family dispute as the two hail from the same town in Andhra Pradesh, but I am not sure what the problem was. I was told he was wanted in a case there.” The case was filed on November 25.
