Chandigarh The Government Home Science College is planning to introduce a course on effective parenting skills to counsel parents of children of all age groups and of those with special needs. The college will be the first in Chandigarh to come up with such a course, due to start anytime next week.

College principal Dr Rita G Singh said: “Most parents feel they know how to raise their kids but today things are very complex. Joint families are breaking down and there is no buffer available for children as both the parents are working and the grandparents are not around. Counselling of parents in such cases becomes very essential and will help them to learn from other’s experiences as well.”

Through the method of orientation, workshops and lectures from experts in the field, the course will encapsulate issues like gender discrimination in parenting, parenting skills and academic achievements.

It will also focus on how to build self-esteem and confidence in children. Parents will be told about tools to assess behavioural problems and emotional quotient of their child and the impact of television, video games and computer on them. Parents will also be made aware about the resources available to them to deal with the child’s behavioural problems.

They will also be given tips to develop time and money management skills in children.

Head of the Department of Human Development and Family Relations, Suman Verma, said, “The course will aim at building support groups and initiating discussions among parents who will be divided into groups of 20 each depending on the age of their children and their needs.”

Verma added that the duration of the course is six months and classes will be held for 2 hours thrice a week.
