Chandigarh He had a firm belief in the Gandhian philosophy of life and had pledged to serve mankind even after death. After a four-month stay at the PGI, 80 year-old Bansari Lal Bhola, passed away on Friday, but not before he had donated his body to the PGI for medical research.

For Bhola, the decision to donate his body was the “best way” in which he could serve humanity.

Survived by his wife, two sons and two daughters, Bhola has left behind a proud family.

Talking to Newsline, his son, Ajay Bhola said, “It was his last wish and we will fulfill it. Though we did not oppose his decision, it was difficult for us to come to terms with it. Gradually, we understood the magnanimity of the step and supported his cause wholeheartedly.”

Terming his father’s act as exemplary, Ajay maintained that he wanted to urge others to come forward for the same. “After seeing my father’s determination, I have also decided to follow in his footsteps. I hope my father’s act will motivate more people to come forward and contribute their bit to the society,” he added.

The family says that though Bhola, a city-based civil contractor, was always involved in social work, it never occurred to them that he would do such a thing.

“My father admired Mahatma Gandhi and followed his principles. The noble gesture is a result of the Gandhian influence on him,” said Anjana, his daughter.

She added that by way of donating his body, her father paid a tribute to the medical profession towards which, he had a deep regard.
