Terming the step a serious infringement of their freedom, members of six student bodies gheraoed the EC members in the afternoon, demanding the committee to revoke its decision. “Why should they spend Rs 20 lakh on CCTVs when we get terrible food in hostels, have problem in getting drinking water and are not provided wi-fi internet connection in hostels?” asked Palash Ghosh, the General Secretary of the Engineering Department of the university. He said whenever we ask the authorities to upgrade the infrastructure, they say there is fund crunch.
The EC has also issued a model code of conduct, by which the students will have to show their identity cards at the time of entering the college.
The protesting students alleged that professor Goutam Gupta, former head of the Department of Economics and a member of the EC, abused and assaulted the guards when he was denied entry in the campus on Janmashtmi. “How can they impose the code of conduct on us when the EC member himself failed to follow it? said Lokeshwari Dasgupta, a post-graduate student belonging to the United Students’ Democratic Forum.
She said the EC is trying to curb our individual freedom and rob the campus of the free and democratic atmosphere.
Dasgupta further said if the authorities are keen to make premises safe they should provide a fence around the mens’ hostel lake which took a life on Tuesday. On the other hand, the EC thinks the students are misinformed and are getting unnecessarily agitated over an issue which does not fall within their jurisdiction.
“CCTVs are absolutely essential for the security of the campus and in a month’s time they will be installed at the gates and at few other strategic locations of the campus,’ said Pradip Ghosh, Vice- Chancellor of the university.
He added that a two-member committee will be set up to probe into the death of Jorangthara, a Mizo student who drowned in the lake at the men’s hostel on Tuesday.

Concern of the students are serious and genuine.Perhaps they are not bothered about their routine jobs like attending classes at daytime. They are certainly concerned rather peeved at the serious encroachment at their free time during the night.Their nocturnal activities like emptying bottles of liquor and other essential related activities would surely be curtailed if monster like CCTV are installed at strategic points which may monitor their free and fearless expression at the dead of night when the noise and pollution of day and the encroachers of freedom like VC and other people who regularly impede the flourishing of hidden talent and genius so far dorment in them. Moreover JU authorities must desist from promulgating any restriction and order - only they allow the student to do anything and everything at their sweet will at anytime of day and night.Hence there would be no problem in the campus. Moreover VC and other ec members should be elected from amongst the students.Peace come
they are thinking about students' security but they are not interested to know what students actually demand..are they really feeling insecurity?
Why not install CC TVs AND provide better food, drinking water and wi-fi in campus as the students are demanding???
Son:Why are JU authrities so keen to install CCTV at the Campus, dad? Dad: For safety and security, particularly to detect Maoists' activities. Son:Do the students like to guard the Maoists' activities? Dad: No, my boy. They like to guard Freudian activities.
This is a very trend-setting development.Hope public support builds up.HRD Minister should pick up a cue on this.
To me the best and the most innovative solution is to make VC, Registrar and other top office-bearers of the University to be from the students. That'll solve a lot of problems. Nowadays, a good majority of the students of these Universities are least interested in good study, but spending time in in political discussions.
