Lucknow Holi saw over a hundred people land in hospitals — most with serious head injuries suffered from inebriated and rash driving on two-wheelers without helmets.

At the Trauma Centre of Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University alone, 44 road accident victims were admitted. A majority were in their twenties and thirties.

"As many as 38 patients have head injuries and 90 per cent of them are still serious. Some have been operated upon and are still under observation," said Dr Arvind Mishra, who was on duty at the Trauma Centre on Wednesday. "Most admitted they had consumed alcohol, but we have not segregated their records as our main motive is to save their lives first."

At Balrampur Hospital, 28 injured were admitted. The doctors said most had head injuries as well. "It is true that a majority had consumed alcohol," said Dr DP Mishra, the Medical Superintendent.

At the Civil Hospital, around 10 victims of road accidents were admitted, eight were admitted at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in Gomti Nagar.

Asked about such rampant drunken driving, Rajendra Kumar, Additional SP (Traffic) said: "We tried our best to control these youngsters. We had stationed people at four points in the city with breath analysers. We have also been making the public aware of the importance of helmets, but when people in large numbers drink and drive, it is difficult to stop them and they are bound to hurt themselves. All I can say is that we did our best."
