New Delhi After his arrest last December for vandalising M F Hussain’s paintings, Binay Singh had said he lived with ex-BJP MP Sanjay Paswan

Amid claims by the saffron outfit Sri Ram Sene that it has no ties with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Newsline has learnt that the general secretary of the outfit resides in Delhi with a former Member of Parliament of the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Binay Kumar Singh, who heads the Sri Ram Sena, as it is called in North India, was arrested in December last year for vandalising M F Hussain’s paintings at an exhibition held at the Constitution Club in Rafi Marg in August. During interrogation, Singh had told the police that he lived in 226, Vallabhbhai Patel House in Rafi Marg. This is the residence of BJP member Dr Sanjay Paswan.

Paswan, who had joined the BJP in 1986, has held the posts of party’s national secretary, general secretary of Bihar and in-charge of Orissa affairs. He was elected to the 13th Lok Sabha in 1999. He was also a minister in Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s Cabinet between 2002 and 2004.

At his residence in New Delhi, Dr Paswan said: “I know Binay Kumar Singh. He has come here many times. But he does not reside here.”

The police, however, asserted that Singh indeed lived in Paswan’s house. “He was arrested after technical surveillance was mounted on his mobile phone. He had initially refused to furnish an address, saying he does not live in Delhi at all. Later, he gave his brother’s office address, which is a media house. He finally revealed that he lived in Dr Paswan’s house,” said a senior officer.

Singh is originally a resident of Dhanbad in Jharkhand and is an LLB dropout from Delhi University. The police said he frequented the residences of elected MPs from Jharkhand in the Capital.

Singh hit headlines in Delhi after his name figured in three cases — for smashing Hussain’s paintings, for spitting on DU professor S A R Geelani at a conference and for ransacking the central office of Samajwadi Party.

When Singh spat on Geelani (an accused in the Parliament attack case who was later acquitted by the Supreme Court) on November 6, he was backed by the student wing of the BJP, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad.

During an interview earlier this month, Binay Singh had told this newspaper that he “does not have a specific address in the Capital”. He had emphasised that he and his group had no ties with the BJP either.

Singh had said the Sri Ram Sena wanted to establish its own version of a “Hindu Rashtra” and warned of moral policing, which he calls “social control”, in the Capital.

“What happened in Mangalore was a mistake. We are examining what went wrong. It is not right to beat up women, irrespective of the provocation. But no revolution is ever decent in the beginning. In Delhi, similar tactics will be employed, but without any violence against women. We will raid pubs, catch the young women and men and hand them over to the authorities,” he had said.

doodh ka doodh aur paani ka paani ho gaya! this is what i have been saying for a long time..its the free run organizations like these and Bajrang Dal, VHP, Shiv Sena, Abhinav Bharat enjoy when BJP comes to power in any state. These guys start vitiating the atmosphere by creating hatred between religions, castes and anything else under the sun, they can differentiate people with. They polarize people pretending to 'protect' the majority from the minorities in the state. Their only aim is to safeguard their constituency and stay in power. And the BJP does not care if 1000s of lives are lost because of this or the people of the state are polarised and there is civil war..For power, the BJP will go to any lengths!

Chief minister B S Yeddyurappa said the BJP or the state government have nothing to do with the Sri Rama Sene or its founder Pramod Mutalik. Police records indicate otherwise. The BJP government has been a long-time friend of Mutalik. A senior police official said the coalition government and the BJP government had withdrawn 54 cases against him. - TOI

Please keep your comment restricted to the subject. Painting of hindu gods was never justified by muslims then why do you have to talk about painting their Prophet. Thats hypocricy on your part

freedom by Amit on 11 Feb 2009

That's his choice on whatever he does, you don't like it then don't see the painting. If you don't like Hussain then don't live in India which is a secular country with freedom of speech, go to Afghanistan or Pakistan!

Media's credibility is low by Bhisham Tyagi on 11 Feb 2009

I am sure the media would like tio defame BJP as much as possible, but i wonder how they have no sense of shame about it.There are hundreds of examples where such persons had Congress contacts but this was never brought out. Media's credibility is going to be low.

Sene's general secretary by v subramanian on 11 Feb 2009

The person may be living with an ex-MP of BJP. But it does not mean that BJP as a party has approved of his actions. In BJP many of the leaders act on their own even against the party's wishes.
