Kolkata In a bid to create pressure on the government to stall the upgrading of Presidency College to a unitary university, the West Bengal Government College Teachers’ Association (WBGCTA) on Tuesday proposed to hold a signature campaign across all government colleges in the state, including Presidency College.

A bill regarding the upgrading of the college is to be placed in the winter session of the State Legislative Assembly beginning this month.

“From this moment onwards we are going in for a signature campaign across all the 36 government colleges, including Presidency College. We demand that not only Presidency, but all colleges should be upgraded,” said Shyamal Basak, general secretary of the association.

The representatives of the 1,500-member strong association today alleged that the college governing body took the decision keeping the association in the dark. Basak said that the signatures collected from the colleges will be sent to the Higher Education department.

“We want the government to take note of the association’s viewpoint on the issue and discuss the upgrading of the college with the association,” a member of the CPM-backed association said.

Presidency College teachers, however, do not seem to subscribe to the opinion of the association. “They are doing more harm than good. On the one hand, the association is objecting the proposal at the eleventh hour and on the other they are bringing out the rift between the administration and the party in the open,” said a teacher of the college.

Highly-placed sources of the college say that despite pressure from the association, a considerable section of college teachers would not sign the proposal of the association.
