The people of Pune have a mélange of moves, nritya and abhinaya, to look forward to on Sunday, January 6. Showcasing the vast repertoire of Odissi, Yogini Gandhi is organizing Concert in Tribute, an offering by a disciple to the Guru. Ever since the titan of Odissi, Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra passed away; danseuse Yogini Gandhi has been presenting a concert in his tribute annually. This year to commemorate his 83 rd birth anniversary on January 8, the event is being held at Symbiosis Vishwabhavan from 5. 30 pm to 8 pm. The event will see the performance of Madhavi Mudgal, one of the leading classical dancers of India and Padmashri award recipient.

“When Odissi was on the verge of extinction, Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra fought all odds and became a world famous exponent of Odissi,” says Gandhi. Keeping Mohapatra’s plighted word and his endeavour to revive Odissi, Gandhi strives to present senior Odissi dancers in the city of Pune. Arushi Mudgal, the niece and disciple of Madhavi Mudgal, who has received the Bal Shree Award in 2002, also had a propitious opportunity of performing with Guru Mohapatra and will perform at Sunday’s event. She has also performed as a soloist at various festivals. Dancing along with her aunt, she is set to enchant the crowds.

Besides being a highly renowned exponent of the Odissi style, Madhavi Mudgal is also a prime disciple of legendary Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra and is credited with blending modern sensibilities with ancient ethos. “Madhavi’s command over the art is striking,” says Gandhi. In fact Mudgal has often been praised for her delicate postures and her magnificent footwork. Her knowledge of music and her aesthetic sense add to the highly distinctive character of her dance. The event is attended every year by dancers and dance enthusiasts who go back suitably enriched with the cultural offerings.
