Dreams run a commentary on our lives, says author Madhu Tandan

What dreams may come....always an intriguing question, always teasing the mind, all its deja vus that flash back and forth, leaving us in a state of conflict, “was it real, or was it a dream,” Madhu Tandan speaks our mind as she turns the pages of her latest book, Dreams & Beyond - Finding Your Way in the Dark. “Dreams are powerful tools of understanding the self. It’s something which we are not aware of, something hidden within ourselves which needs delving into,” it was Madhu’s Guru, Sir Madhav Ashish, who introduced her to this ‘excellent tool of self analysis.’ “A learning during my seven years in Tibet,” she smiles, at this metaphor which holds the genesis of her being. “I was about 27 when my husband and I packed off everything, loaded our jeep and drove to Sir Madhav’s ashram tucked away in the Himalayas. He was a British turned monk running a Vaishnav monastery not many knew of, and it was here that we spent seven years of discovering ourselves, our being,” Madhu’s endless quest saw her tilling the land, milking cows, making their own bread, cooking on wood, leading an ascetic life. The phase came to an end, and Madhu, with her ‘education’, pored it in her book, Faith & Fire, “where intertwined with the narrative were dreams...it was like chorus and echo.”

Dreams, according to Madhu, are like parallel stories to our lives. They come from the sub conscience, and deal with everything - “inner desires, conflicts, relations...they help us understand, heal and solve problems. Some of the most fantastic discoveries were made in dreams, like diabetes, sewing machine, even Einstein attributes his works to dreams. They are constantly running a commentary on our lives, and we can never know which is the reality,” Madhu feels we are ancient beings refusing to explore what lies beyond. “That’s why I’ve talked about spiritual dreams, the paranormal ones, pre-cognition and telepathy. Dreams are highly rational and their reality is more convincing for they hold the key to our living experiences. They are indicators to the after life and the waking life,” she thus says do not deprive yourself of REM. “Sleep, dream for if you don’t, it intrudes in the form of delusional thinking.” Dream on. But before that, catch her talk at the State Library, Sector 34 at 4pm, on Saturday, February 21.
