Inderfurth, who has served as US Representative for Special Political Affairs to the UN, called for stronger Indo-US ties under the Obama administration.
Inderfurth is now John O. Rankin professor of the Practice of International Affairs, Elliot School of International Affairs, George Washington University.
“It is time for the US to publicly support India’s bid for a permanent seat on the UN Security Council and to work towards accomplishing the goal of Security Council expansion. This is necessary for the political stability of the region. Also, the G-8 should be expanded to include India,” Inderfurth said on Friday.
He was speaking at a discussion on ‘Future directions of US relations with India and the Region’, which was organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).
Inderfurth said stress should be given on nurturing a “cooperative relationship” between the US, India and China. He, however, added that this should not become a “competitive triangle”.
