Ambala, January 5 According to the noted cardiologist Dr HK Bali, “If the increasing incidents of heart diseases are not checked, India will have maximum number of heart patients in the world by 2020.” He further adds that besides genetic factors, the life style of people has undergone drastic change that has become a major cause of heart attacks.

Spelling the major symptoms and risk factors of heart attack, Dr Bali says that people with family history of heart ailments are more prone to developing heart attacks at an early age. High blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, obesity, stressful and sedentary life style are contributing to the increasing rate of heart attacks among Indians in a major way. He suggests major changes in life style and control of risk factors may reverse this trend.

According to the noted cardiologist, even younger people in their thirties with cardiac risk factors should get periodic preventive check-ups of blood cholesterol, blood sugar, TMT and echocardiography.

Claiming that angioplasty is more effective in heart attacks, he points out that conventional methods of clot busters remain the only widely available method of treating patients.

He stresses that in the event of heart attack, patients should be transported to tertiary care centres immediately.
