The participants urged India and Pakistan not to allow terrorists to hijack peace agenda and go back to the composite dialogue process. Many of them held the US responsible for the terrorist activities in the world. Underlining the need for mutual understanding, Imtiaz Alam, Secretary General, South Asian Free Media Association (SAFMA), said, “War will be lethal for the whole region.”
Justifying India’s rage after the Mumbai terror attacks, Alam said, “The world showed sympathy towards it. Pakistan’s admission that those who attacked Mumbai were from its soil should have come earlier. However, India should now shun anger and hold a dialogue.”
Asma Jehangir, chairperson, Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, said whoever had attacked Mumbai wanted to bring India and Pakistan on a collision course. “They partially succeeded, but miserably failed in the end when India used their gimmick to its advantage by going to the UN,” she said. Jehangir said when the UN came into the picture, the context became global. “We must insist on evolving SAARC for finding a solution and avoid going to the much more complicated mechanism provided by the UN,” she said. Swami Agnivesh, a Hindu scholar, said terrorist camps were undoubtedly running in Pakistan, but the US gave birth to them. Veteran journalist Kuldeep Nayar also lambasted the US for supporting terrorist camps in Pakistan. CLP leader Rajinder Kaur Bhattal and Minister Captain Kanwaljit Singh were also present.
