Sources in the government say governments from both the countries are willing to organise the games.
To ensure that the games are held on time, the Indian Olympic Association and the Punjab government have shown a keen interest in organising the games in Jalandhar if the situation in Pakistan does not improve by that time.
While SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal and MP Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, who is president, Punjab Olympic Association, have given a green signal to the event, it is upto the authorities to decide the final venue.
Talking to Newsline, Randhir Singh, secretary general of the Indian Olympics Association, said the games are scheduled to be held in Pakistan as per the earlier agreement between the two governments, but the games have been delayed owing to one reason or the other.
He said, “Pakistan has named Lahore as the venue of the event and in case they have a problem in hosting it, we are ready to hold it in Jalandhar even at the last minute.”
Randhir Singh said hosting of the games would give a boost to sports and tourism in the state. “We hope if it is held here, it would be a great success,” he added.
The last games were held in Patiala in 2005; about 600 sportspersons from both the countries had participated in it. The last edition of the games was held in 14 disciplines. They are hockey, athletics, gymnastics, tug-of-war, cycling, shooting, kabaddi, wrestling, weightlifting, badminton, basketball, volleyball, handball and polo.
