The BJP leader, who was arrested on Saturday, is accused of threatening a diamond polisher over phone by posing as a police Inspector.

While the police were probing the complaint lodged by polisher Jitendra Sagar that he had received a threatening call, Udani visited the B Division police station in an inebriated state. He was immediately arrested for violating the Prohibition Act.

The complainant told the police that Jagdish Gajera, owner of a diamond unit, was abusing him over phone when someone took the latter’s cellphone and threatened him, saying he was a police inspector.

Sagar approached the police and lodged a complaint against Gajera, who was arrested after some time. During interrogation, Gajera told the police that the man who identified himself as an inspector was Udani.

While the police searched for the BJP leader, Udani himself went to the police station to clarify his stand. When he was talking to Inspector S N Mehta in the presence of Deputy Superintended of Police Mangalsinh Parmar, the former found him drunk and lodged a complaint before arresting him.

Sub Inspector H M Solanki, who is investigating the case, said, “Udani was arrested under Prohibition Act and under IPC sections 170 (obtaining fake identity), 504 (abusing), 507 (threaten on phone) and 114 (helping in committing crime).”
