Mohali 7 injured; 7 damaged vehicles lead to traffic jam for over an hour

Driving under the influence of liquor resulted in multiple injuries to seven people in Mohali on Monday. An inebriated driver ran his bus over three cars, three auto-rickshaws and a motorcycle standing at a red signal at the Phase 3B2-VII light point, resulting in a major traffic chaos. The incident occurred around 10 am.

While the inured, including a toddler, were rushed to hospital, the traffic on the busy road connecting Mohali to Chandigarh remained disrupted for over an hour. And as the police surrounded the bus driver to protect him from public bashing, a laptop, two mobile phones and a wallet of the victims were reportedly stolen from the damaged vehicles.

The recklessly driven tourist bus of a leading private company was coming from Chandigarh and did not have any occupant, the police said.

The injured are Rupinder Kaur, her three-year-old son, Ramandeep Kaur, Harsh Kumar, Tarlok Singh, Rajpal and Fuman Singh. All were travelling in auto-rickshaws.

Recuperating in hospital, when Harsh asked his attendants to collect his laptop from the accident spot, he learnt that it had been stolen. Same was the case with Ramandeep’s wallet and the mobile phones of two others.

Frayed tempers were, meanwhile, witnessed at the site after the accident. A huge gathering surrounded the bus and it took a large number of policemen to pacify the crowd. Till the seven damaged vehicles were pulled away from the middle of the road around 11.30 am, long rows of vehicles could be seen stranded on all four sides of the busy crossing. Mataur SHO Devinder Singh said the bus driver, Iqbal Singh of Bathinda, had been arrested for driving under the influence of liquor and other charges.
