Kolkata There was tension at B C Roy Children’s Hospital after the death of an infant on Thursday. The relatives of one-year-old Ishaan Nag claimed that he died of medical negligence.

According to the Ishaan’s family, the infant was admitted to the hospital on January 31 after he complained of a mil breathing problem.

The doctors had said that his condition was improving and was supposed to be discharged soon from the hospital, they said. But around 6 am today, the family received the news of Ishaan’s death.

The family said that last night the child did not get adequate medical attention and there were no doctors and nurses on duty.

Angry relatives started breaking furniture of the hospital and police had to be called in to bring the situation under control.

The hospital authorities, however, have not filed any complaint with the police about the incident. An inquiry panel has been formed to probe if there had been any medical negligence in the treatment of the child, the hospital authorities said.

This is not the first time that the hospital has been drawn into a controversy. Last year, the hospital was in the centre of a storm after three children died, allegedly due to negligence.

Relatives of a 65-year-old woman who died in South General Howrah Hospital claimed that she died as there was no doctor to treat her. Chameli Devi was admitted on Thursday morning with acute diarrhoea and died in the afternoon. Her relatives beat up the hospital officials and damaged a portion of the hospital. The situation became normal only after the police arrived at the hospital. A hospital official said no one was arrested, and they would form a committee to probe into the allegations.
