According to a senior police officer, the victims have been identified as Asit Mahato (30) of Bankhshole village and Girija Prasad Mahato (35) of Simli village in Jhargram police station area. The bodies were found on the road near Ektal village in Jhargram police station area.
Praveen Tripathi, SP Jhargram, said: “Maoist posters were found near the bodies, which claimed that they were given death for working as police informer.”
“They used to run a shop,” the officer said. “Asit Mahato was a CPM worker but Girija Prasad Mahato did not have any affiliation to any party. The Maoists picked them up from the shop in the evening.”
According to sources, the two played an important role in supplying information to the police, which led to the death of Umakanto. Umakanto’s home was a stone’s throw from their shops.
The Gana Pratorodh Committee led by CPM cadres, meanwhile, caught Kaloo Mahato alias Umacharan, a squad member of the Jhargram Squad on Thursday. A Maoist squad attacked a hamlet, Pochakhali, near Radhanagar village, where villagers resisted the squad for the first time in the district. A senior police officer of Jhargram said: “The Maoist has been handed over to us. He is in our custody.”
