Lucknow, February 6 Two employees of the Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSTC), critically injured in Tuesday’s clash and admitted in the Trauma Centre, were stated to be out of danger by the doctors the next day. “While Ram Sanjeevan had suffered head injuries, the other injured, Pratap Singh, received a bullet in his lower leg. However, both are out of danger now, said a doctor, preferring anonymity.

Superintendent of Police (West) A K Rai, commanding officer at the time of the clash, was transferred late on Tuesday night. The transfer is believed to be a fallout of his statements after the clash, when he stated that no bullets were fired and the police only used water cannons, tear gas and mild force to disperse the crowd.

Over two-dozen people, including six policemen, were injured in the clash between Roadways employees and the police. The incident occurred when the police stopped over 6,000 roadways employees, who were marching towards the Vidhan Sabha to protest the government’s plans of privatising the state transport.

Later, Lucknow Senior Superintendent of Police Akhil Kumar stated in a press conference that the police did fire some shots in the air to disperse the crowd.

Commenting on the Pratap Singh’s injuries, Kumar today said he is continuously changing statements. “Yesterday, he told the police he was in Kaiserbagh, a good distance away from the site, at the time of the incident. Singh claimed he was moving towards the bus stand when he heard a shot and a bullet hit his leg. Now, he is saying that he was present at the incident site and a bullet hit him. We are probing the incident and will soon find the truth,” said the SSP.

He also said Rai’s transfer was routine and had nothing to do with the incident. “The proposal was on paper for the last one week,” he added.
